Real change to lorry charging needed, say campaigners.
Campaign for Better Transport reacts today (28 March), to the announcement by Road Minister, Jesse Norman MP, on reductions in the HGV levy for less polluting lorries.
Philippa Edmunds, Freight on Rail Manager, Campaign for Better Transport, said:
"While we welcome measures to reward hauliers for using cleaner less polluting engine technology (euro VI), what is really needed is a fundamental reform of lorry charging.
"The existing daily charge neither reflects the real per mile costs of HGVs, nor incentivises efficiency which results in unnecessary lorry miles causing extra congestion, road damage, collisions and pollution."

Our latest research, issued this year, shows that HGVs are still only paying a third of the costs they impose on society in terms of road congestion, road damage, collisions and pollution which results in a £6 billion annual subsidy from taxpayers.
