New London road pricing measures welcomed but rail freight undervalued, say campaigners.

Campaign for Better Transport responds today, 21 June, to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan’s, new transport strategy announcement aimed at tackling rising car use across London.

Bridget Fox, Sustainable Transport Campaigner, Campaign for Better Transport said:
“We praise the Mayor and TfL for embracing the need for road pricing to reduce traffic across London which is fairer on all road users and will be a real improvement on the current Congestion Charge.

“The journeys that cause the most congestion can be targeted to help reduce London’s lethal air pollution: the money raised must be invested in improving public transport for the benefit of everyone, not new roads, making London a truly liveable city.”

Philippa Edmunds, Freight on Rail Manager, Campaign for Better Transport added:
“The Mayor needs to safeguard more rail freight sites in its strategy so that more construction materials can be brought into the centre of London, as rail already brings in 40 per cent of aggregates. For example each freight train carries enough materials to build 30 houses. Rail was also used to bring in construction materials and remove waste/spoil for CrossRail and the Olympics.

“We support the proposal to lobby the DfT for more rail freight capacity. However, TfL needs to recognise that some traffic is destined for the capital and that rail freight brings huge economic, safety and environmental benefits and that it is already avoiding peak hours on the North, West and South London Lines.”
